Urinary tract infection is the term used to describe acute urethritis and cystitis.

It is a common disorder accounting for 1 to 3% consulting of general medical practice.

Prevalence of UTI in women is about 3% at the age of 20years.

UTI is associated with multiplication of organism in urinary tract.

It is defined by presence of more than 105 organism per ml in midstream sample of urine.

This is denoted as significant bacteria.
