Mumps is an acute infectious disease. It is a self limiting disease.

Common children and adolescents.


Cause

RNA virus

Transmitted by Droplet Route


Clinical Feature

Sudden onset of Fever

Headache

Bodyache

Malaise

Earache

Difficulty in opening mouth.

Tenderness in parotid region.

Sublingual and submandibular gland may be affected

Non suppurative enlargement of one or both parotid gland.

Salivary gland may be affected.


Mortality rate - Minimal

Age - 5to15 years of age.


Duration

5-6days before and 6-8 days after the clinical onset of disease.


Secondary attack rate

About 80-90%

Myocarditis

Orchitis

Oophoritis


Prevention and control

Monovalent Mumps vaccine is a live.

Highly potent.

Dose- 0.5 ml

A combined vaccine is also available as MMR vaccine.

Case of Mumps is difficult to control.

Case should be isolated.


Homoeopathic medicine for Mumps

  2. Parotidinum
  3. Belladonna

Phytolacca

Phytolacca is a highly effective medicine for Mumps.

Pressure and tension in parotid gland.

Throat feel very hot.

Shooting pain into ear on swallowing.

Swollen of parotid gland.

Cannot swallow anything hot.

High fever, alternating with chillness.

Great prostration.

Worse by sensitive to electric changes, effects of a wetting, when it rains, exposure to damp, cold weather, right side.

Better by warmth, dry weather, rest.


Parotidinum

Parotidinum has been used as a prophylactic against infection by Mumps.

In this instance it is generally given in the 6th or 30th two or three times a day to those exposed to infection.

It is very useful medicine for swelling of parotid gland.

In the disease itself it may be given every four hours, either by itself or alternated with other indicated remedy.

The well known complications which sometimes occurs with Mumps suggest its possible use in these condition.

Belladonna

Belladonna is a best suited remedy for Mumps.

A highly feverish state with comparative abscence of toxemia.

Burning, pungent, steaming heat.

Feet icy cold.

Superficial blood vessels, distented.

Perspiration dry only on head.

No thirst with fever.

Hearing very acute.

Dry, hot, sensitive skin.

Swelling of parotid gland.

Sensation of a lump.

Difficulty in deglutition, worse liquid.

Otitis media.

Tearing pain in middle and external ear.
