Madarosis Falling of Eyebrows and Eyelashes




It means loss and falling of Eyelashes and eyebrows. Loss of eyelashes (Ciliary Madarosis) or eyebrows ( superciliary Madarosis). The word "fall off" is derived from the ancient Greek word 'Madao' that terminology is used now. Loss of lashes caused by several conditions including a variety of skin disease, drug side effect, endocrine disorder, toxins, psychiatric disorder. 

Trichotillomania is a self induced pulling of hair from anywhere in the body but is also applied to eyelash- pulling. It may be affected one sided or both sides also. In most cases, psychiatric evaluation and treatment are needed.

Milphosis also means eyelash loss.

Madarosis and milphosis are often used interchangeably.

It's normal to loss between 1-5 eyelashes each day but sometimes more rapid falling of eyelashes can be a symptom of any health complaint in the eye or in another part of the body.
