Lung abscess and its Homoeopathic Medicine




Lung Abscess is localised collection of pus in the lungs caused by pyogenic organisms usually subacute infection.


Cause

Infection

Pyrogenic bacteria :- staphylococcus aureus, Klebsiella

Fungi :- Histoplasma capsulatum 

Parasites :- Amebas, lung flukes


Pulmonary Infarction

Pulmonary thromboembolism

Septic embolism

Wegener's granulomatous


Neoplasms

Metastatic malignancy

Clinical Feature

It presents within 1-2weeks


Onset - Insidious, acute or chronic


Cough - most common feature of with copious expectoration of foul smelling, greenish yellow and mucopurulent sputum.

It may be rusty and blood stained.


Pyrexia-High remittent fever with shivering and sweating.


Chest pain- Pleuritic pain if pleural surface involved


Generalized symptoms- Malaise, lassitude, loss of weight, anorexia.


Signs

Temperature: Very high with tachycardia

Clubbing of fingers

Dullness on percussion and few coarse crepitation during early phase.

Signs of cavity or local consolidation may occur when pus is expectorated out

Sign of pleural effusion may mask other signs.

Chest x-ray

Fiberoptic bronchoscopy

CTscan


Complications

Dry pleurisy

Empyema

Pneumothorax

Brain abscess

Hemoptysis


Treatment

Chemotherapy

Postural drainage and percussion therapy

Bronchoscopy aspiration

General measure- bedrest, oxygen, high protein diet, breathing exercises.

Surgery


Prevention

The most common mode of acquiring lung Abscess is the following aspiration following tonsillectomy, oral surgery, nose throat operations, following inhalation of vomitus during general anesthesia or coma or iatrogenic due to intermittent positive pressure breathing and nebulization.
