Homoeopathic Medicine For Onychomycosis




Onychomycosis is an infectious disease, also known as "Tinea unguium".

It is a fungal infection of nail unit.

The most common cause of onychomycosis is Trichophyton rubrum.

It is caused by fungal infection including dermatophytes, candida, non-dermatophytes molds. 

When dermatophytes causes onychomycosis, this condition is called tinea unguium.

A nail finger causing thickened, brittle, crumbly or ragged nails.

Onychomycosis can infection both finger nail and toenails but onychomycosis of toenail is much more prevalent.

While non life threatening, onychomycosis can lead severe complications such as cellulitis, sepsis, osteomyelitis, tissue damage and nail loss.

A abnormal nail not caused by a fungal infection is a dystrophic nail.


Causes

Fungal infection 

The most frequent cause of onychomycosis is "Trichophyton rubrum".


Affected site

Finger nail 

Toenails are more common affected 


Clinical features 

  1. White or yellow nail discoloration 
  2. Thickened nail
  3. Brittle nail
  4. Separation of nail from the nail bed


Complication

Lower leg cellulitis 


Differential diagnosis 

  • Dermatitis 
  • Nail injury 
  • Psoriasis 


Treatment 

Antifungal medication - terbinafine
