Aphthous Ulcer, also called as canker sores.

These are small, shallow sore inside the mouth or at the base of the gums.

The term  'aphthous' is derived from the Greek word "aphtha" which means ulceration. 

Recurrent Aphthous stomatitis is one of the most common painful oral mucosal conditions seen among patients.

Aphthous ulceration are initially and primarily the results of T cell- mediated immune dysfunction but also may involve neutrophil and mast cell- mediated destruction of mucosal epithelium.

Mouth ulcer range in size and exact symptoms of the mouth ulcer well depends on what type of ulcer the patient is suffering. 

Aphthous Ulcers are generally round in shape and form in the soft area of the mouth such as  the inside of lips, the cheeks or the underside of the tongue.

Recurrent Aphthous stomatitis can also result from a nutritional deficiency, particularly lack of iron, vit B3, vit B12, vit c , folic acid.

Aphthous Ulcers are a common variety of the ulcer that forms on the mucous membranes, typically in the oral cavity.

They are usually white and yellow in the center and have a red border and can be extremely painful.

Clinical features

Oral pain

White and pale yellow colour ulcer  in mouth

Difficulty in eating and drinking

Burning sensation in mouth

Risk factor

Family history present

Emotional stress


Rinse your mouth with warm and salted water.

Apply antiseptic gel to the ulcer like Orajel.

Topical corticosteroid

Avoid stress.
